At first it was difficult to understand how easy it was for you to walk away.

I have always known you to be full of concern for all these numerous others - forlorn friends, abused strangers, innocent children, abandoned kittens.

You told me once of seeing a kitten crying by the street for its mother, and you weren’t sure if you should have picked it up or walked away.

I hated you once for your disregard for those who loved you, despite all other empathy.

But then I realized that you’re still struggling to love yourself first.

It took a while, but I eventually remembered the complexities of attraction.

Objects are attracted to more immense bodies in the emptiness of the vast vacuum of space. Satellites orbit planets, stars are specks of dust to distant universes. Asteroids and comets are similarly subjects to each respective pulls.

Everything else drifts away elsewhere.

It would perhaps make sense that you considered all these abandoned beings more deserving of gravity than you do - you, still unsure of your place and stellar value in this universe. You who are still choosing between implosions or supernovas. You in constant search of space.

I dedicate this line to you; it’s from a TV series I’ve considered my compass for my own growth: “I pray for you … for you to find peace.”

And thanks. You know who you are. I’ve said everything else, as have you. And I’m glad I got to tell you this in person first in its raw form before this light year distance of a dedication.

The View from Home (Batangas City, March 2013)

When I was younger, my older cousins would take me to an afternoon at the beach near our place. I think we have a few photographs of those, although I don’t seem to recall the last time I saw said photos. It has been that long.

So I ~~forced (because I’m older and my word is law bwahaha)~~ asked my sib and cousins for a late afternoon photo shoot at Tabangao Aplaya, Batangas.

Aplaya, I believe, means shoreline in my language.

Our beach, though, isn’t as pristine as it used to be. The nearby factories and gas plants have basically rendered this once-abundant fishing village dead. While the fish have not all gone, it’s no longer what it used to be, from the stories I hear from my older relatives who lived during better times.

And so, my sister and our twin cousins joined us for an afternoon of photos and hanging out by the beach to try and make the best out of the sunset.

I love this snapshot. I think I made a joke and clicked by accident.

I … don’t remember how I did this.

We call this the Assassin’s Creed shot.

The afternoon we took this photo was for us a new way of looking at our hometown. The shore was all green from all the vegetation (were they moss? algae?) and at some points littered with a few broken pieces of glass from old bottles.

At some point I even saw a call card meant for overseas communication. I assume that this was from among the population of locals who went abroad for the so-called greener desert pastures.

While at times picturesque, the town has for years been subject to an emptiness. The diaspora of the town is so inherent that it’s almost sickening. I’ve always noticed this about my hometown.

While the industries that littered my birthplace have stolen all means of growth from all of those of us who chose to stay, one thing that remained constant is the sunset we’ve been blessed with all these years.

I guess, for now, the view of the afternoons should be enough to keep us going.
